Mehdi Bennani was given a post-race two-second penalty for contact with Volvo’s Nicky Catsburg in the Main world Touring Car Championship race in Morocco, dropping him to sixth in the classification.
Bennani was penalised for nudging Catsburg wide at Turn 3, which gave the Moroccan racer fourth position – a place he would hold on the track until the chequered flag.
However the race official deemed that the move was unfair after the race, and Bennani was subsequently handed a two-second penalty, which not only moved Catsburg back up to fourth but also allowed Bennani’s Sébastien Loeb Racing team-mate Tom Chilton into fifth.
The penalty means that Bennani drops from third in the championship standings to fourth, with the Citroën racer now on 26 points, 17 adrift of the championship lead.
There were no other penalties after the Main Race.
