Colin Turkington keen to progress from third row start

Colin Turkington is looking forward to making headway from the third row of the grid after qualifying fifth for Team BMW ahead of the first round of this years British Touring Car Championship.

Turkington, who started the weather-disrupted half-hour qualifying session among the favourites to claim the first pole position of the new season, was unable to improve upon his previous best efforts as the rain intensified and incidents for other drivers – including Ashley Sutton and Dave Newsham – brought out multiple red flag stoppages.

The opening race tomorrow will mark the first time since 1996 that BMW have raced in the BTCC as a fully-fledged manufacturer entry.

“I’m relatively happy with qualifying fifth, considering how much the session was affected with the red flags and then the rain,” commented Turkington.

“There’s a bit of frustration because we weren’t able to show the true pace of the BMW in that session, but fifth is a good place to be starting tomorrow and if I can get away well, there’s no reason why I can’t finish the first race a couple of spots further up.”

Team-mate Rob Collard will start from 15th, whilst BMW Pirtek Racing stablemate Andrew Jordan sits in a slightly improved 11th for the first round of the new campaign.
