Josh Cook waited for right moment to “pounce” for podium finish

MG Racing RCIB Insurance’s Josh Cook was able to make the best of a rare mistake from Silverline Subaru BMR’s Jason Plato to take the final step on the podium behind race 27 winner Colin Turkington and Rob Austin, having been embroiled in a hotly-contested three-way fight.

The former Clio Cup ace has showed good pace this weekend so far, and was able to launch his MG6GT past the Levorg of Plato with the slightest of contact between the pair through Clearways on the 16th and final lap of race one.

Cook admitted to TouringCars.net that he had two possible choices on how to pass the two-time champion, after Plato went wide at Sterling.

“He ran a bit wide, so I got the run alongside him into Clearways,” said the 25-year-old, who took his second podium of the season.

“It was either stick round the outside and out drag him to the line or get the cutback. He looked like he was going to brake pretty late, so the move around the outside was pretty unlikely. I got it stopped nice and early and he was hanging it quite late on the inside.”

The Somerset driver was also waiting for events to unfold in front of his MG in the latter stages, as Plato was trying to put the pressure on Austin to make it a Subaru 1-2.

“Luckily it did, and I was able to pounce on it.”
