Mat Jackson produces defensive masterclass to take race three win

Motorbase Performance racer Mat Jackson drove a determined defensive race in the final British Touring Car Championship race at Knockhill to deny WSR’s Sam Tordoff and Subaru’s Jason Plato the victory.

Having landed pole position in the reverse-grid draw, Jackson was never headed in the 27-lap race as he defended like never before to score a fourth victory of the season and remain in title contention.

No matter how hard he tried, BMW driver Tordoff simply couldn’t get past the Ford in front, although second gives him a nine-point championship advantage over Honda’s Matt Neal, who took fifth.

Plato followed up his win in race one and his third in race two with yet another podium, elevating the former champion up to seventh in the championship.

Rob Collard was one of the highest profile casualties in the race, despite being the early challenger for the win. Tordoff’s team-mate and title rival had started from second on the grid, but was taken out of the race at Clark curve on lap eight when Subaru’s Colin Turkington made a late dive up the inside and hit the BMW hard, ending both drivers race.

The result means that Turkington is only five points ahead of team-mate Plato in the drivers’ championship.

Local racer Gordon Shedden brought his Honda home in fourth on the tail of Plato, ahead of team-mate Neal who stayed out of the lead battle for the duration of the race.

Handy Motorsport’s Rob Austin once again scored a top ten finish in sixth, ahead of WIX Racing’s Adam Morgan in seventh, despite a late race trip through the Duffus Dip gravel whilst trying to pass the Toyota driver in front.

The second Motorbase Performance car of Andrew Jordan and WSR’s Jack Goff completed the top ten.

As in race two, an early safety car intervention was required when the MG of Ashley Sutton became beached in the gravel at Hislop’s following contact from another driver. His team-mate Josh Cook also retired from the race having pulled off on the start straight after eight laps.

Michael Caine once again failed to take the start due to the recurrence of his back injury.
