Reigning champion José María López rose to the top of the times in second practice for the World Touring Car Championship at Vila Real in Portugal, putting his Citroën ahead of Honda’s Norbert Michelisz and Tiago Monteiro.
López set his time of 1:56.365 with just under ten minutes to go in the session, improving on first practice as he went six tenths faster than the best lap in the morning’s earlier session.
Michelisz was the leading Honda driver in second, with the Hungarian having briefly had a spell at the top of the times just before López went quicker by 0.334 seconds.
Home favourite Monteiro was once again third quickest, exactly half a second slower than his Argentine rival at the front.
Yvan Muller put his Citroën in fourth, with the Frenchman hitting the kerbs hard at the chicane as he sought to close the gap to his team-mate.
Thed Björk was an impressive fifth fastest in the leading Cyan Racing Volvo, ahead of the morning’s pace setter Rob Huff in sixth, with the Honda driver being the last person to be within a second of López.
The leading independent racer was ROAL Motorsport’s Tom Coronel in seventh, ahead of the top LADA of Nicky Catsburg in eighth.
Sébastien Loeb Racing’s Mehdi Bennani was ninth fastest, with Münnich Motorsport’s James Thompson completing the top ten, 2.090 seconds off the pace.
LADA’s Gabriele Tarquini failed to post a time in the session due to technical issues on his car, whilst Zengő Motorsport’s second entry of Dániel Nagy also failed to participate with recurring throttle sensor problems that hampered him in first practice.
Qualifying takes place at 14:00 WEST / BST.
