Jean-Karl Vernay leads Leopard Racing 1-2-3 at Spa

Jean-Karl Vernay took his first TCR International Series win in the second race at Spa-Francorchamps, leading a Leopard Racing 1-2-3 ahead of Stefano Comini and Antti Buri.

Vernay got the jump on pole sitter and team-mate Antti Buri at the start of the race, taking to the outside of La Source to complete his pass for the lead.

Buri followed the Frenchman for the first lap but lost out to defending champion Comini halfway around the second lap, with the Swiss racer then taking the lead from Vernay through turns five and six on lap four.

Comini’s lead wouldn’t last for long though, with Vernay retaking the lead on the following lap in an almost identical move on his team-mate.

The order then remained unchanged at the front, despite B3 Racing’s Mat’o Homola looking to close in on the group in the later stages of the race. The Slovakian racer would have to settle for fourth.

Friday’s race one winner Aku Pellinen took the chequered flag in fifth as the best-placed Honda driver, having gained a place on the opening lap and then benefitted when Attila Tassi went wide on lap two.

Craft-Bamboo Raving’s James Nash was sixth, having lost out to Pellinen on the second lap of the race. The Brit was heading a trio of the Lukoil racing cars for much of the race, with Pepe Oriola finishing in seventh.

Sergey Afansyev would have followed his team-mates home in eighth, but the Russian went wide on the last lap of the race at Turn 11 and allowed the WestCoast Racing Honda of Kevin Gleason into the position.

Local racer Pierre-Yves Corthals, taking part at Spa in order to promote the TCR BeNeLux series, took a well-deserved tenth place finish in the older-specification SEAT León Cup Racer.

Two drivers were handed drive-through penalties for exceeding the track limits, with Liqui Moly Team Engstler’s Davit Kajaia and B3 Racing’s Attila Tassi finishing in 14th and 15th positions as a result.

The weekend proved to be a difficult one for WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli, who retired on the opening lap of the race when his front-right tyre came off the wheel as a result of contact with B3 Racing’s Dušan Borković, who also retired from the race.
