Dave Newsham targeting reverse grid win

Dave Newsham is adamant that he can win the third British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone if the reverse grid draw plays into his hands.

Haivng qualified fifth, Newsham landed his best result of the season as he race to fourth in Sunday’s opening race at the Northamptonshire circuit, chasing championship leader Gordon Shedden to the flag.

And speaking after the race, Newsham said he was pleased to be racing at the front of the pack once again.

“It’s great to be there; it’s been a while, hasn’t it?” he said. “Finally we got qualifying sorted and we showed that we’re as quick as anybody out there – it’s a shame that the season is coming to an end now.

“It’s a shame that I just didn’t have the pace early on to go with the guys and that’s a characteristic of our car – we just can’t switch it on early.

“At the end of the race we were as quick as anybody – we could probably have done with another 20 laps. We missed a trick somewhere but it’s a great racecar and I was confident going into that race that we could move forward.”

And while Newsham said that he expected to struggle to repeat that finish in race two, he was pinning his hopes on a good draw in the reverse grid race.

“We had a bit of weight for race two at Donington so we’ve got quite a bit more weight on, and we’ve got the softs. I think we’re starting 13th too which is not a great mix.

“But we’ve just got to hope we can luck into a reverse grid and then if we get the weight off and see if we can go and win the final race. That would be the dream, but we’ll see what happens in race two.”
