WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli has been stripped of his victory in the opening TCR International Series race at the Red Bull Ring, after the Honda driver was judged to have driven in an unsporting manner.
Morbidelli was handed a post-race 30-second penalty for contact with the cars of Stefano Comini, Andrea Belicchi and Pepe Oriola in what was a closely-fought race.
The penalty means that Comini inherits the win and extends his championship lead, with Belicchi up to second and Oriola in third. Morbidelli’s penalty drops him out of the points-scoring positions to 12th position.
After the race, Comini criticised Morbidelli’s driving during the race. “The Honda was very fast and consistent here, I tried to be tactical, but it was difficult to stay in front,” said the Swiss racer. “On top of that, Morbidelli hit me in the back at the beginning of the race and a few more times, which significantly affected my car’s performance in the closing laps.”
