Derek Palmer forced to withdraw from Donington

The Support our Paras Racing team have been forced to withdraw Derek Palmer Jr’s Infiniti Q50 from the remainder of the British Touring Car Championship weekend at Donington Park with an engine problem.

Palmer had finished the opening race of the day in 22nd, but had struggled for power throughout the race.

With the car having been examined, the decision was taken to withdraw it from the remainder of the weekend, despite the exact nature of the problem being unclear – something which disappointed Palmer greatly.

“The engine let go,” he said. “We’re not 100% sure what it is yet and we need to see what the deal is, [but] initially we pulled the data off the car and there’s nothing there that stands out.

“Between qualifying and the race today we changed the balance and it’s improved again but from the very start I was on the radio and we were lacking power and couldn’t get sixth gear anywhere, it just wasn’t pulling so it was a bit confusing – we had no warning signals on the dash though [and] everything was reading as it should.

“The one thing we can take from it is that having changed the car, our corner entry and exit speeds are better – but it’s disappointing not to be able to capitalise on that and to be out of race three.”
