Audi’s Miguel Molina was the fastest driver in free practice for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at Oschersleben, ahead of BMW’s Marco Wittmann and fellow Audi driver Jamie Green.
Spaniard Molina posted the top time in the closing minutes of the session on his penultimate lap, following it up with a lock-up at turn one. However the 25-year-old had also been fastest at the start of the session. Previously Green had been top of the times approaching the end of the session in his Team Rosberg-run Audi.
Reigning champion Mike Rockenfeller was fourth fastest, ahead of Abt’s Edoardo Mortara and Phoenix Audi team-mate Timo Scheider in sixth.
Augusto Farfus was seventh fastest for BMW Team RBM, just under half a second off the pace.
The top driver for Mercedes-Benz was youngster Pascal Wehrlein in eighth, 0.505 seconds off the pace. Overall it was a better session for the marque, with Christian Vietoris joining his stable-mate inside the top ten, with BMW’s Bruno Spengler seperating the two in ninth.
In total there were five Audi drivers, three BMW drivers and two Mercedes drivers inside the top ten.
Mercedes’ Paul di Resta continued to struggle on his DTM comeback, posting only the 19th fastest time, 1.001 seconds off the pace. Also struggling was his DTM rookie team-mate Vitaly Petrov, who has 21st and endured an off-track excursion through the gravel in the final minutes of the session.
At the bottom of the timesheets, Mercedes’ Daniel Juncadella and BMW’s Timo Glock completed the least laps, being seldom seen on the circuit with only 11 and 7 laps completed respectively.
Qualifying takes place at 14:10 BST (15:10 CEST).
