Fabrizio Giovanardi concerned by qualifying run

Airwaves Racing’s Fabrizio Giovanardi expressed his disappointment after qualifying in 18th position on his return to the British Touring Car Championship.

Giovanardi’s return to the series had been one of the highlights of the off-season, but the two-time champion struggled throughout the day in his Ford Focus, to a greater extent than he had expected to.

“Obviously it’s disappointing,” Giovanardi told TouringCars.Net. “I wasn’t expecting to be in pole position because I have to learn the car again, but to be eighteenth makes me a little concerned.”

The Italian believed that there was a chance his fortunes could imrpove on raceday,

“If we find out the problem, yes,” remarked the 47-year-old. “The engineer is working on the car – I’ve said what I’ve got, they have to find out.”

Despite his troubles, Giovanardi reiterated his affection for the BTCC, four years after he last raced in the series.

“It’s absolutely fantastic – I was at home. I was doing some long distance racing but it was boring and to be back in the championship I am liking it, it’s fantastic.”
