Münnich Motorsport to take break from WTCC

German World Touring Car Championship team Münnich Motorsport has announced that it is to take a break from the WTCC in 2014, with a view to returning full-time in 2015.

The Friedersdorf-based team entered the WTCC full-time at the start of the 2013 season with drivers Rob Huff, Marc Basseng and team owner René Münnich. In its time in the WTCC so far the team has collected three podium finishes and one win, all at the hands of Huff.

For 2014, however, the team has announced that it will not participate full-time due to being unable to secure a 2014-specification car. The team has been running ageing SEAT León 1.6 turbo-powered cars in 2013, which although eligible for 2014, will be significantly off the pace of the leading machinery.

With Huff having announced a switch to the works LADA team for 2014, team owner Münnich confirmed his squad’s sabbatical for the forthcoming season.

“Marc and I will participate in some infrequent races with the old car next year, when we have some space in our schedule,” said Münnich. “In 2015 we will aim to start again in the World Touring Car Championship with the whole team.”

Münnich also confirmed that the squad would compete in the FIA Rallycross World Championship next year at the wheel of an Audi A3, with Münnich himself set to participate in some events.
