Yvan Muller goes fastest in second practice

RML’s Yvan Muller went fastest in second practice for the World Touring Car Championship in China, beating Volvo’s first practice pace-setter Thed Björk by 0.340 seconds.

Muller improved on second fastest in the opening practice session to move to the top of the times with eight minutes remaining in second practice. However it was once again Polestar Racing’s Björk who impressed in the ageing Volvo to go second fastest.

Tom Chilton was third fastest in the second RML Chevrolet, ahead of LADA’s James Thompson in fourth. Thompson had at one stage been second fastest, before the RML duo went faster.

The bamboo-engineering pair of Alex MacDowall and James Nash were fifth and sixth fastest respectively, ahead of the Tuenti Racing Chevrolet of young Spaniard Pepe Oriola.

Works Honda drivers Tiago Monteiro and Gabriele Tarquini completed the top ten seperated by the Münnich Motorsport SEAT of Rob Huff.

Stefano D’Aste ended the session in 11th as the top BMW driver and the Italian was also the last driver to be within a second of Muller’s pace.

WTCC returnee Rickard Rydell was 15th fastest for Nika Racing and was the slowest of the turbocharged Chevrolet drivers.

Yukinori Taniguchi was quickest in the EuroSport Asia Trophy in 25th, ahead of Filipe Clemente de Souza. Taniguchi is, however, the only driver in the category to be racing at the wheel of a turbocharged car.

Mehdi Bennani failed to post a time for the second session this weekend due to technical problems with his Proteam Racing BMW.
