Rockenfeller fastest in wet practice

Photo by Audi AGAudi’s Mike Rockenfeller was the fastest driver in practice for the season-opening Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at the Hockenheimring, beating Mattias Ekström to the top time on a wet circuit.

During the one and a half hour session, Audi’s Rockenfeller posted his time inside the last couple of minutes to secure bragging rights ahead of qualifying, beating Swede Ekström by 0.153 seconds.

BMW’s Augusto Farfus finished the session in third, having traded top times with the leading duo in the final half an hour of the session.

The early pace-setter in the session, Timo Scheider, ended fourth, ahead of BMW’s Martin Tomczyk. Jamie Green ended his first practice session for Audi in sixth, ahead of the top Mercedes driver of Christian Vietoris in seventh.

Mercedes’ most experienced driver, Gary Paffett, ended the session in eighth, whilst the top rookie award went to young German Pascal Wehrlein who posted the ninth best time, the last driver to be within a second of Rockenfeller, some 0.959 seconds off the pace.

BMW Team Schnitzer could only manage 12th with reigning champion Bruno Spengler and 22nd with Dirk Werner.

DTM Qualifying takes place at 14:40 CEST (13:40 GMT).
