WTCC Asia Trophy announced

The promoter of the World Touring Car Championship, Eurosport Events, has today announced that there will be a dedicated trophy launched for the Asian events.

With the increase in Asian drivers entering the Asian events – 2012 saw 13 Asian drivers enter the series for one of the Asain events at Suzuka, Shanghai and Macau – and the top driver at the end of the six events will receive the Eurosport Asia Trophy, as well as exposure on the WTCC website and through Social Media.

“In recent years we have noticed more and more interest in WTCC from the Asian drivers,” explains Marcello Lotti, WTCC General Manager.

“Especially because most of the former WTCC cars continue racing in the national championships in Macau, Hong Kong, China and other countries in the Far East. To encourage them and in appreciation of their efforts, we have decided to award a special trophy that will be handed during the end of the season prize giving at Macau. And on top of this we are currently negotiating with potential sponsors to allocate prize money.”

The top 8 drivers from each of the six races in Asia will score points, with the winner securing 10 points down to 1 point for eighth position, while additional points will be awarded if a driver secures any outright Championship points.
