Scheider had not taken a pole position in the DTM since the second visit to the Hockenheimring in late 2010. However the 2008 and 2009 champion has been on strong form all day and took his 10th career pole in the series by almost three tenths of a second from Audi Sport Team Phoenix’s Mike Rockenfeller.

Audi Sport Team Rosberg team-mates Filipe Albuquerque and Edoardo Mortara also enjoyed a strong qualifying session, with both making it into the A4 shoot-out and qualifying in third and fourth respectively.

Swede Mattias Ekström qualified in fifth to ensure that the top five cars were all Audi A5’s. Sixth was the best Mercedes driver Jamie Green, who ran wide through the gravel on his penultimate qualifying lap.

BMW’s best driver was Dirk Werner in seventh, with the German qualifying in the top ten for the second event in succession. Eighth was current championship leader Gary Paffett, whilst Christian Vietoris and Adrien Tambay completed the top ten.

The session proved to be a disaster for BMW, with only one car (Werner) inside the top ten. Moreover, Paffett’s closest competitor in the fight for the overall title, Bruno Spengler, qualified only 18th after being knocked out of qualifying in Q1. In addition Martin Tomczyk, currently fourth in the driver’s championship, qualified in 11th after missing the cut for Q3 by just 0.054 seconds.

Both BMW Team RBM cars driven by Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus struggled in the session, ending up 16th and 20th.

David Coulthard qualified 22nd and last for the second weekend in a row after struggling with the set-up on his Mercedes-Benz.

Round 7 of the 2012 DTM takes place at 14:03 Berlin time (13:03 GMT) on Sunday and is broadcast live on ARD.
