Yvan Muller goes fastest in second practice

Yvan Muller posted the fastest time in the second World Touring Car Championship free practice session at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, pipping Alain Menu to the top time in the closing minute of the session.

Muller had gone fastest early in the session with a lap of 1:55.981. However at the halfwya stage, Menu (Michel Vaillant for the weekend) posted the fastest time with a lap of 1:55.910. Muller eventually toppled the Swiss racer in the final minute of the session to post a time 0.320 seconds faster than his team-mate.

Rob Huff was third fastest, 0.477 seconds slower than Muller. Fourth was Aleksei Dudukalo – just ahead of his Lukoil Racing team-mate Gabriele Tarquini, who had comfortably gone fastest in the morning session.

Franz Engstler was sixth fastest, although at the halfway point of the session the German was as high as second quickest.

Norbert Michelisz was seventh, ahead of Tiago Monteiro, Pasquale Di Sabatino who was the last driver within a second of Muller’s time. Stefano D’Aste completed the top ten, 1.034 seconds off the pace.

Both Team Aon drivers struggled with the set-up on their Ford Focus’ during the session, meaning that Tom Chilton and James Nash could only manage 21st and 22nd respectively, more than two seconds off the pace.

Qualifying takes place at 1415 CEST.
