The origins of the Mugello Circuit lie in races staged on the public roads around Mugello from 1914. By 1970, after a tragic accident involving members of the public, the road racing came to an end and a permanent circuit was sought.

Construction of the circuit began in 1973, and the first race was held in June of the following year.

Initially popular with the likes of the World Sportscar Championship, in the mid-1970s and 1980s the circuit also became a regular with the European Touring Car Championship.

The demise of both meant car racing gave way to increase prominence in motorcycle racing, with Mugello having been the host of the Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix every year since 1994.

The track came under ownership of Ferrari in 1988, which carried out extensive renovation work. The layout of the track has remained unchanged since it first opened – allowing interesting comparisons of historical lap times to be made (although resurfacing work has taken place over the years).

It is noted for its environmental credentials – including using 100% renewable energy, a quarter of which is produced using solar power on-site.
