Junui Park claims maiden TCR Europe win in Hungaroring race two

Solite Indigo Racing’s Junui Park claimed his maiden TCR Europe victory in race two at the Hungaroring, withstanding late-race pressure from Ruben Volt in the reverse-grid race.

Hong Kong racer Victor Chan had the pole position for the second race, but a slow launch from the line allowed Park into the lead, followed by the Monlau Motorsport CUPRA of Viktor Andersson and the BRC Racing Hyundai of Gabriele Covini.

Further back, Mike Halder jumped before the lights went out, then dropping down the order when he baulked the start thereafter, the German ending the opening lap down in 14th place as a result.

To make matters worse for Halder, he was also penalised with five-seconds added to his race time for the jump start.

At the front, Park opened up a small lead over Andersson and Covini, but it was Volt who would be the one to watch, the Estonian, who lost his race one victory after a post-race penalty, in seventh at the end of the opening lap.

Chan was then turned around by Covini at Turn 3 on the second lap, although the Honda driver kept going and, after miraculously avoiding the barriers, resumed at the very back of the pack in 20th.

Volt was up to fifth and pressuring Alex Ley for fourth by the end of the second lap, muscling through at Turn 2 to take fourth, before getting Covini for third at Turn 2 on lap six.

Volt then got by Andersson for second after a late race safety car – called upon when Nicolas Taylor dived inside PMA Motorsport team-mate Nicola Baldan at Turn 1 on lap five but crashed into the side of the other Audi.

Taylor and Baldan were out of the race on the spot with broken suspension and body work damage. The incident will be a big blow to the Canadian’s title chances, having entered the weekend as the points leader.

After the race resumed, there was limited time for Volt to get by Park, who won by just under four tenths of a second from Volt, with race one winner Marco Butti completing the podium in his Monlau Motorsport CUPRA.

Andersson was fourth, having lost third when Volt took second, with Covini bringing his Hyundai home in fifth.

Ley was sixth, ahead of Squadra Martino’s Tiago Pernía in seventh, new team-mate Santiago Concepción in eighth, with the top ten completed by Felipe Fernández and the recovering Chan.

Despite crossing the finish line in tenth, Halder was classified in 11th after his penalty.
