ALM Motorsport’s Mike Halder ended the opening day of the TCR Europe season with the top time in Mugello, following the first two practice sessions of the year for the 24-car field.
It had earlier been Solite Indigo Racing’s Junesung Park who had topped the first session with a time of 1 minute 55.182 seconds, but Halder went a tenth of a second quicker in the afternoon to end up with a lap of 1:50.061 as the benchmark.
BRC Racing’s Alex Ley was third, having been just 0.006 seconds slower than Park in the first session, with Junui Park ending up in fourth overall, having also been within a tenth of the FP1 pace.
Halder himself had put in a time good enough for third in the opening session, but the German found an extra tenth and a half later in the day to cement his position as the leading Honda driver.
PMA Motorsport’s Nicola Baldan was the top Audi driver, with the Italian putting in the fifth best lap of the day overall in the afternoon session, when he had been second only to Halder.
BRC’s Gabriele Covini was sixth overall, the BRC Hyundai driver’s best time coming early on in FP1.
The best of the CUPRA drivers was Monlau Motorsport’s Marco Butti in seventh overall, ahead of the Honda of Squadra Martino’s Tiago Pernía in eighth.
Completing the combined top ten times were PMA Motorsport’s Nicolas Taylor and ALM Motorsport’s Ruben Volt.
Ley failed to post a time in second practice due to a mechanical issue with his Hyundai.
Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 10:55 CET (09:55 GMT) on Saturday.
