Dan Cammish cruises to race one win as Tom Ingram extends points lead

NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish won the opening British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Brands Hatch, as Tom Ingram further extended his championship points lead over Ash Sutton.

Drama befell pole-sitter Daryl DeLeon before the start, as the WSR driver had to pull into the pitlane at the end of the formation lap with an apparent engine issue.

That gave Cammish a clear run from the front row of the grid at the start, and he duly led into the first corner, as Team Vertu’s Tom Chilton briefly took second from NAPA Racing UK’s Daniel Rowbottom.

Rowbottom reclaimed second a corner later, whilst further back Team Vertu’s Adam Morgan muscled past Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill at Graham Hill Bend with slight contact.

Two corners later, Hill slowed with a front-left puncture on his BMW and dropped to last, with the demise of two of the leading BMWs promoting Ingram to fifth by the end of the lap.

Ingram put up no defence of that place to WSR’s Charles Rainford on the second lap. Chilton relieved Rowbottom of second for good at Druids on the next lap, and two corners later at Surtees Morgan made contact with Rowbottom, dropping the Ford driver three places at Rainford capitalised and assumed third.

Cammish, meanwhile, built a lead of just over a second at the front before coming under moderately more pressure mid-way through the race when Chilton closed in, only to extend the margin towards the end as he claimed his third win of the season.

Chilton was second, his sixth podium of the season, whilst Morgan completed the podium after muscling past Rainford at Surtees on the 11th lap. The Lancashire racer was later reprimanded for the incident with Rainford, but not penalised in terms of his result.

Rainford thus took the chequered flag in fourth as the only BMW in the points, ahead of Ingram in fifth, who was the leading driver running the medium-compound tyre.

Ingram has now extended his championship lead to 37 points, with only 44 points available from the final two races of the season.

Rowbottom was sixth, never recovering the places he lost when Morgan muscled by, ahead of Toyota’s Gordon Shedden in seventh.

Restart Racing’s Daniel Lloyd was the top Independent driver in eighth, his ninth class win of the year, with NAPA’s Sutton and the second Restart Hyundai of Chris Smiley completing the top ten.

Smiley had got ahead of Sutton on lap 12, but the Northern Irishman slid wide at Graham Hill Bend two laps later and Sutton seized back ninth.

Toyota’s Josh Cook came through from the back of the grid, after an overnight engine change, to take 11th, passing team-mate Árón Taylor-Smith for the place on the penultimate lap, with Taylor-Smith thus 12th.

After his puncture, Hill was only 19th, whilst WSR’s Aiden Moffat was 20th, having had a spin whilst running in 11th before pitting and then receiving a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pitlane.

Race two is scheduled to get underway at 14:05 BST.
