Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill took his second win of the day in the final British Touring Car Championship race at Knockhill, having taken the lead from reverse-grid pole-sitter Daryl DeLeon early on.
DeLeon started from pole after the top six were reversed from the race two result, and the WSR driver for much of the opening two laps.
However, stablemate Hill dived inside at the hairpin on the second lap and whilst DeLeon, one of only four drivers on the medium compound tyre, tried to get a better exit on the outside, he had to cede to Hill into the first corner of the next lap, with NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish also in close quarters.
Cammish then followed Hill into second two corners later. The top six saw few changes over the following laps, but Team Vertu’s Tom Ingram was applying heavy pressure on NAPA’s Ash Sutton in fifth throughout.
Team play came into the mix as well, with Team Vertu’s Senna Proctor running directly ahead of Sutton on the road in fourth, whilst Tom Chilton was also acting as rear gunner for Ingram in seventh, although he had to contend with NAPA’s Daniel Rowbottom for the position, including some place swapping, as a result.
On lap 16, Sutton made his move on DeLeon for fourth, having been given respite from Ingram’s attacks when Rowbottom moved into seventh behind.
Sutton wasted little time in getting past Proctor for third at McIntyres a lap later, whilst Ingram passed DeLeon for fourth as the BMW slipped down the order.
It took until the last lap for further team play to come in to factor, as second-placed Cammish slowed on the approach to the line to allow Sutton into second, controversially appearing to do so under waved yellow flags as the stricken BMW of DeLeon blocked the pitlane entry.
Indeed, the positions would be reversed after the race, as Sutton was given a one-place penalty for overtaking under yellow flags, leaving Hill as the winner by five seconds ahead of Cammish and Sutton.
Ingram was fourth, and as a result loses just two points to Sutton in the title race, with Ingram leading on 323 points ahead of Sutton on 306.
Chilton prevailed in fifth ahead of Rowbottom, whilst Team Vertu’s Adam Morgan was seventh, benefitting when Proctor was handed a ten-second time penalty for exceeding track limits.
WSR’s Charles Rainford was eighth, with the top ten completed by team-mate Aiden Moffat and Toyota’s Gordon Shedden.
Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley was the top Independent driver in 11th, extending his new points lead, ahead of team-mate Daniel Lloyd in 12th.
Only three drivers failed to finish – DeLeon two laps from the finish, Toyota’s Árón Taylor Smith retiring to the pits at mid-distance, whilst the Corolla of Max Buxton crawled to a halt on the opening lap of the race.
