Adam Shepherd wins twice but has one taken away on Sunday

Adam Shepherd won twice on the road in TCR UK at Croft, although the Capture Motorsport driver had his race two win taken away from him when he was excluded for contact with another competitor.

Race Two

Area Motorsport’s Steve Laidlaw started race two of the weekend, and the first on Sunday, from the reverse-grid pole position, and the CUPRA driver duly held the advantage at the front for the opening five laps.

But Shepherd, from tenth on the grid, was on a charge. The CUPRA championship leader had climbed to fourth on the opening lap, and then swiftly dispatched Will Beech for third at Sunny In on the next lap.

Callum Newsham surprisingly didn’t prove to be much of a challenge either, and a lap later Shepherd was into second, albeit over a second and a half behind Laidlaw.

It took just two laps for Shepherd to catch Laidlaw, and on lap six the leading CUPRA driver clipped the tyres at the chicane as Shepherd closed in.

Then, heading into the Jim Clark Esses, the pair made contact, and Laidlaw was pitched into the barriers and out of contention.

Shepherd went on to win on the road, but the stewards decided he was to blame for the incident and threw him out of the results, gifting victory to JH Racing’s Newsham in the Hyundai i30.

Power Maxed Racing’s Finn Leslie was six seconds behind in second, with Sam Laidlaw – who had stalled on the grid – recovering to take third.

Race Three

In race three of the weekend, Shepherd had pole with Steve Laidlaw alongside, Newsham in third and Sam Laidlaw fourth on the grid.

Steve Laidlaw made the best start and seized the lead into the first corner, as Shepherd held second and came under pressure from Newsham.

But on the second lap, Steve Laidlaw lost his car at Barcroft corner under pressure from Shepherd and slammed backwards into the barriers, damaging the barrier and significantly damaging his CUPRA.

Further back, Alex Jones had also had a sizeable shunt off-camera, causing extensive damage to his Volkswagen Golf, and as a result the race was red-flagged.

After a lengthy delay, a full restart took place, although Finn Leslie had to be pushed off the grid with an issue on his Hyundai before the race got underway.

At the restart, Shepherd had a clear run into the first corner thanks to the absence of Steve Laidlaw, with Newsham and Sam Laidlaw in second and third.

The only major incident came on lap five, when Gregory Saunders, having just lost fifth to Harry Bloor at the hairpin, clattered into the Hyundai of Bloor at the first corner a few metres later, sending both scattering into the gravel and out of the race.

Two laps behind the safety car followed; when racing resumed on lap seven there were no further changes and Shepherd took victory from Newsham and Sam Laidlaw, with Bradley Hutchison in fourth, making up for an earlier retirement in race two.
