Jack Goff takes comfortable win in second race at Silverstone

Eurotechs Racing’s Jack Goff took his second career victory in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone, leaving the rest of the pack to fight behind themselves as he opened up a comfortable lead over second placed Tom Ingram.  Third controversially went to Ash Sutton after contact with BMW’s Colin Turkington.

After their heavy accident in race one, both Rob Collard and Will Burns were taken to hospital for precautionary checks, with both reported to have avoided serious injury.  It is understood that Burns has broken a few ribs and Collard has a back injury that is being looked at and x-rayed.

Despite some serious damage in the same incident, the BMW Pirtek Racing team worked hard to get Andrew Jordan back out for the race and he lined up at the rear of the field.

Despite a small shower from the start, the track remained dry.  Ingram and Turkington would be the leading front runners starting on the harder option tyre.

Ingram got a good start, despite his success ballast and being on the harder tyre.  Morgan, on the other hand, dropped down to sixth initially before edging his way back and recovering a position from Sutton at Luffied.

On lap three,  Goff managed to get through into the lead at Becketts.  Ingram tried to fight the Honda but with the extra weight and harder tyres in such cold conditions, there was nothing he could do and Goff then took off into the distance to build his lead through to the end of the race.

Meantime, the battle for third got very heated with Turkington, also struggling on the harder tyres causing a train of cars to bunch up behind him.  This enabled Goff and Ingram to initially get away until the harder compound tyres got some heat in and Turkington managed to start chipping way at the gap to Ingram.  Morgan, in the meantime, wanted Turkingtons third position and was pushing hard, often getting alongside but not being able to make the move stick.

Elsewhere, Stephen Jelley and Andrew Jordan had a coming together and Jordan ended up with a puncture and yet another DNF.  Aiden Moffat, despite a great start also had to retire due to a broken drive shaft.

Rob Austin had a strong start, getting by Dave Newsham on lap 6 for 6th place where he remained for the rest of the race.  Meanwhile, Sutton had joined the fight for third with Turkington and Morgan.

Tom Chilton’s sub for this weekend, Rob Huff was obviously getting to grips with the Power Maxed Racing Vauxhall Astra, as he got himself into the top 10 by mid race.

At half time, Goff had already pulled a 2.1 gap on Ingram but Turkington, along with Morgan, Sutton and Austin were in close pursuit.

Lap 15 saw Sutton finally get by Morgan on the inside of Copse.  Austin tried to follow but ended on the grass.  Turkington started to really push Ingram and Goff was already 3.7 down the road.

Gordon Shedden, in the meantime, had made his way up to 7th place from 11th on the grid and was starting to catch Austin and the rest of the train for third place.

In the dying stages of the race, Sutton was desperately trying to get by Turkington trying moves left, right and centre. On the final lap, Goff crossed the line with a comfortable lead of 4.3 seconds ahead of Ingram.  The battle for third however, went down to the last few corners as Sutton went around the outside at Brooklands, the pair touched, leaving Sutton on the inside line at Luffield and with a better exit and, as a result gave him third place.

The final race of the day will be at 17:22 BST
