Rob Huff quickest as Fredy Barth has heavy shunt

Rob Huff was the fastest driver in the second free practice session in Macau – however the session was stopped prematurely when SUNRED driver Fredy Barth had a heavy accident. Barth crashed his Sunred León heavily into the barriers and was knocked unconscious by the impact as his car then proceeded to catch fire.

The Swiss driver was quickly extricated from the car and has been taken to hospital for precautionary checks having inhaled smoke.

The session was the first to take place in fully dry conditions all weekend and as a result the times tumbled to their expected mark of around two and a half minutes. Just 0.129 seconds covered the Chevrolet top three – with second-placed Alain Menu just 0.032 seconds slower than Huff.

Behind the Chevrolet’s there was a considerable gap – fourth fastest Tiago Monteiro was more than two seconds off Huff’s outright pace. Darryl O’Young proved that he has the speed to go strongly around his local circuit by setting the fifth fastest time.

Morocco’s Mehdi Bennani was once again the quickest of the BMW drivers – setting a time in his Proteam car just over 3 seconds off the pace in seventh.

The biggest improver since the first session was Macau local André Couto, who was eighth fastest. Tom Coronel also improved on his earlier performances to go ninth. The Dutchman this time managed to avoid the barriers which he crashed into at the end of the first session.

Making his début this weekend local driver Kuok Io Keong set his first laps of the weekend, but problems with his car meant that he was unable to lap within a minute of the rest.

There was bad news for 778 Autosport’s Lo Ka Chun, however – the Hong Kong racer’s Peugeot 308 has been deemed to be not in compliance with the FIA’s homologation requirements and as such has been excluded from the event.
