Callum Newsham wins race two as Adam Shepherd takes title

Callum Newsham claimed victory in the final TCR UK race of the season at Brands Hatch, but it was Adam Shepherd who secured the drivers’ championship by finishing in sixth.

Gregory Saunders started the reverse-grid race from pole position, but at the start the usual front-runners were quick to establish themselves at the front, with Newsham going from ninth to third in a matter of two corners, before taking the lead from Sam Laidlaw at Clearways.

Thereafter, the JH Racing driver was in a class of his own, romping to a fourth win of the season by a margin of over two seconds from the Area Motorsport-run CUPRA of Laidlaw.

George Jaxon completed the podium, the CUPRA driver having moved up to fifth at the start before swiftly dispatching Mark Smith and Saunders and then enjoying a relatively quiet race to the chequered flag thereafter.

The fiercest battle was for fourth, which eventually went the way of BSR’s Max Hall, who had hounded Bradley Hutchison for the place for much of the race.

At half distance, Shepherd was in the thick of the battle as well, but the CUPRA driver ceded to Hall and ultimately finished behind Hutchison to take sixth and do enough to clinch the title.

Rick Kerry was seventh, ending the year on a high after rejoining the series for the finale, ahead of Saunders in eighth.

The race was ultimately red-flagged four minutes from the end when Jeffrey Alden’s Opel Astra dropped oil on the circuit at Paddock Hill Bend, causing Will Beech and Luke Sargeant to go off the circuit and end the season in the barriers. Sargeant had been running in eighth at the time but was ultimately a non-finisher.
