Teddy Clairet headed a Team Clairet Sport 1-2 in the second TCR Europe race at Spa-Francorchamps, after Marco Butti crashed out of second on the penultimate lap of the race.
Teddy Clairet had started from third on the grid, but after a strong start he got a run on pole-sitter Viktor Andersson exiting the La Source hairpin, taking the lead on the run up to Eau Rouge.
Jimmy Clairet moved up third past the other front-row starter of Sten-Dorian Piirimägi through the first sequence of corners, with Andersson holding station in second early on.
Butti, meanwhile, started the race in fifth and the MM Motorsport driver was involved in close battles with Junesung Park on the opening lap.
On lap two, the race one winner moved ahead of Park for fourth into La Source, and then took third from Jimmy Clairet at the end of the lap.
Butti had to try twice to take second from Andersson – his first move into the bus stop chicane on lap four was judged to have been in excess of track limits and the young Italian was told to give the place back.
But Butti re-passed Andersson two laps later, and looked to be a contender for the win as he sought to cut Teddy Clairet’s early lead.
However, Butti came under late-race pressure from Jimmy Clairet and then on lap 11 he crashed at Blanchimont at high speed, having seemed to suffer some sort of failure on the front-right of his Honda.
That meant Teddy Clairet was able to take a comfortable win ahead of his brother Jimmy by over nine seconds, with MA:GP’s Andersson completing the podium.
Junesung Park was fourth, holding off Solite Indigo Racing team-mate Junui Park in fifth in the latter stages.
ALM Motorsport’s Ruben Volt took sixth, his best result of the year, having benefitted when team-mate Piirimägi slowed on lap seven with an issue whilst running in fifth.
Aikoa Racing’s Nicola Baldan was seventh, having spent much of the race in a close battle with RC2 Racing’s Santiago Concepción, Monlau Motorsport’s Eric Gené and JSB Compétition’s Julien Briché.
Briché ultimately retired to the pits with a front-right puncture, whilst Gené was eighth as the leading CUPRA – his team-mate Jenson Brickley retired on lap front-right puncture, having made contact with Concepción on lap three resulting in a trip through the gravel.
PMA Motorsport’s Nicolas Taylor and Aikoa’s Filippo Barberi completed the top ten.
Friday’s pole-sitter Felipe Fernández started from tenth for the reverse-grid race, but retired in the pits, whilst ALM’s Sven Karuse pulled off the circuit after three laps to retire with an issue.
Teddy Clairet now leads the drivers’ championship standings with 91 points, ahead of brother Jimmy on (87), Gené (64), Junesung Park (63) and Butti (57) etc.
