Colin Turkington heads BMW 1-2 in Brands Hatch qualifying

Colin Turkington scored the 28th pole position of his British Touring Car Championship career in qualifying around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, heading BMW team-mate Adam Morgan by 0.050 seconds.

Having topped his group in the first part of qualifying, Turkington was then fourth fastest in Q2, in which only the top six drivers progress to the final stage of qualifying.

There, the Northern Irishman produced a lap three minutes from the end which was just three tenths of a second shy of the lap record, topping the session and claiming pole with his effort of 47.875 seconds.

Morgan was second, qualifying on the front row of the grid for the first time since he took pole at Rockingham in August 2018, ending up just half a tenth from pole.

Dan Cammish was the quickest of the NAPA Racing UK quartet, putting his Ford Focus in third, ahead of an impressive lap by team-mate and reigning champion Ashley Sutton in fourth.

Sutton made it into the final part of qualifying despite having little hybrid allocation due to entering the meeting second overall in the drivers’ standings.

Josh Cook continued to be the best of the Speedworks Motorsport Toyota quartet, putting his LKQ-backed Corolla in fifth, with Daniel Rowbottom making it three out of four NAPA cars in the ‘Quick Six’ session in sixth.

Toyota’s Andrew Watson narrowly missed out on progressing beyond Q2 and was seventh, the Northern Irishman being set to share the fourth row of the grid on Sunday with EXCELR8 Motorsport’s leading driver Tom Ingram.

Ingram was two tenths off the pace in Q2, but not disappointed with his efforts, given his lack of hybrid boost in the session by virtue of leading the drivers’ standings.

EXCELR8’s Ronan Pearson and team-mate Tom Chilton completed the top ten, ahead of Toyota’s Rob Huff in 11th and Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill in 12th.

Hill had struggled for pace throughout the session, continually posting times which were only good enough for 12th.

Despite topping first practice, both Power Maxed Racing drivers missed out on getting beyond Q1, with Mikey Doble in 13th and Árón Taylor-Smith just 14th in their Vauxhall Astras.

Speedworks’ Aiden Moffat was 15th, having been bumped out of his group by stablemate Andrew Watson’s late improvement.

Race one is scheduled to get underway at 11:50 BST on Sunday.
