Comtoyou Racing’s Nathanaël Berthon headed up an Audi 1-2-3 in the second FIA World Touring Car Cup practice session in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, edging out first practice pace-setter Gilles Magnus by 0.039 seconds.
Frenchman Berthon bagged the fastest lap in the closing minutes of the session, with his effort of 1 minute 16.383 seconds knocking off long-time pace-setter Magnus from the top of the timesheets.
Magnus, who had earlier been quickest in FP1, was nonetheless still second fastest, less than half a second being his fellow RS3 driver, with wildcard racer Franco Girolami completing an Audi 1-2-3.
Championship leader Mikel Azcona was the leading Hyundai racer in fourth, three and a half tenths off the pace, ahead of the Audi of Tom Coronel in fifth.
Azcona’s team-mates Norbert Michelisz and Nicky Catsburg kept close the pace, putting their Elantras in sixth and seventh respectively, the latter having improved late on in the half-hour session.
Macedonian wildcard Viktor Davidovski again demonstrated top ten pace to put his Audi in eighth, with the top ten being completed by Münnich Motorsport’s Esteban Guerrieri and Team Engstler’s Attila Tassi.
It was notable that Azcona’s only title challenger, Néstor Girolami in the other Münnich Honda, struggled for pace and could only muster up the 13th-best time, over a second off the pace.
Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:30 GMT (18:30 local time, 16:30 CET).
