Josh Cook wins as Colin Turkington leads championship

Josh Cook storms through to take his fifth British Touring Car Championship victory of the season, and his 10th Thruxton win.

Colin Turkington, who finished second, leaves Thruxton top of the championship standings.

A slow start for Michael Crees allowed Cook to jump forward to third off the line. He then made short work of Turkington and closed onto the back of pole sitter Stephen Jelley.

It took slightly longer for Cook to find a way past Jelley, but soon moved through to the race lead. Jelley let his team-mate come through, allowing Turkington to challenge Cook for the race lead.

Little challenge came from Turkington, however. Cook gradually edged out a gap of almost three seconds, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. Turkington began to close in slightly in the final laps but was still 2.662s back. Jelley finished a distant third to score his first podium finish since Oulton Park.

Turkington’s closest title rival had a strong climb up through the order. Sutton started 11th but swiftly moved up through the order. He had made it up to P5 when he met Rory Butcher. Butcher spent the second half of the race defending against Sutton and wouldn’t be able to shake him until the final lap. On the final lap, Sutton began to slow slightly, almost falling back into the clutches of Dan Rowbottom, but managed take the chequered flag fifth.

Tom Ingram and Jake Hill, who came into the race joint on points, both had difficult races.

Ingram’s race started strong, but he slipped backwards as the race progressed. After dropping behind Sutton, he had Rowbottom and Michael Crees to contend with. Rowbottom managed to make a move done up the inside as they approached the final chicane. Crees tried to follow Rowbottom through, but Ingram shut the door in time and finished P7.

Hill had an off early on and dropped outside the top 10. He then spent the rest of the race trying to recover. Ricky Collard put up a strong challenge and almost managed to hold Hill off. Hill would eventually come through to take P12.

Hill wasn’t the only one to suffer an off. Sam Osborne came to a stop on track early on, while Jason Plato was forced to pit with a puncture and damage. Late in the race, Adam Morgan and Ash Hand were battling for position the pair made contact. Hand tried to go up the inside of Morgan, but hit the rear of the BMW and both were sent into a spin.

Gordon Shedden and Dan Cammish couldn’t match Sutton’s charge through the order, finishing 9th and 10th respectively, ahead of Dan Lloyd, Hill and Collard.

Ollie Jackson and Jack Butel completed the points paying positions, Butel earning his first point of the season.
