Stephen Jelley bags top time at the end of second practice

Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley secured the top spot in second practice for the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch Indy, with times tumbling well below the qualifying lap record.

Towards the end of the session, with just over four minutes to go, BTC Racing’s Josh Cook had held the fastest time with his effort of 47.868 seconds.

But a minute later, Power Maxed Racing’s Michael Crees went just over a tenth of a second faster with his effort of 47.762 seconds, topping the times for the second occasion in the session.

But with just 30 seconds to go, Jelley usurped them both, claiming the top spot with a lap which was a tenth faster still, his lap of 47.654 being two tenths faster even than the NGTC qualifying lap record.

Crees ended up in second in his Vauxhall, ahead of Excelr8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram, who had put his lap time in just after Cress went fastest.

Cook slipped to fourth at the end, having opted to bring his Honda in to conclude his session five minutes before the chequered flag flew.

Jake Hill was fifth fastest in the MB Motorsport BMW, ahead of the Ciceley 3-Series of George Gamble in sixth.

Gordon Shedden was the second-quickest Honda for Team Dynamics in seventh, whilst BMW’s four-time champion Colin Turkington was eighth.

The top ten was completed by Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom and Ciceley’s Adam Morgan, the latter being just three tenths of a second off the pace.

It was again a challenging session for the Motorbase Ford squad. NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish was the best of the Focus drivers down in 18^th, whilst reigning champion Ash Sutton was only 21^st. Earlier in the day the team had failed to break into the top ten as well.

BTC Racing’s Jason Plato, who had been eighth and less than two tenths off the pace in FP1, slipped to 22^nd in second practice, just under eight tenths off the pace.

The session was slightly less competitive overall than first practice, with the top 23 being covered by less than a second.

Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 15:50 BST.
