Josh Cook doubles up ahead of Jake Hill at Thruxton

BTC Racing’s Josh Cook opened up a 25-point lead at the top of the drivers’ standings after doubling up in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Thruxton ahead of MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill.

Hill once again launched his BMW away from the line better than Cook and took the lead into the first corner, with Cook slipping back to third at Campbell, but Cook emerged back in second by the time the cars had exited the complex.

Hill initially looked to have enough of a lead to at least hold on for the lap, but Cook steamed up behind the BMW on the approach up the hill to the chicane and the Honda driver pulled off a superb pass around the outside of Hill on the approach to the chicane to take the lead back.

Hill then kept close to Cook as he had in the opening race, but again the MB Motorsport driver was never really close enough to mount a serious challenge for the win.

As in race one, NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton completed the podium, but the reigning champion was a distant third, finishing just over three seconds behind Cook.

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington and Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom also finished in the same positions as in race one in fourth and fifth respectively, the latter having fallen back from Turkington’s BMW.

Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan took sixth, gaining a place at the start when BTC’s Jason Plato had a poor first lap and dropped four places.

Despite that, Plato came back in the second half of the race. Having dropped to tenth, Plato moved up two places on lap four when Toyota’s Rory Butcher forced BMW’s Stephen Jelley wide at Seagrave, with Plato then getting past Butcher himself later around the lap.

The two-time champion then recovered to seventh three laps later with as pass on Excelr8 Motorsport’s Daniel Lloyd, holding station to the end of the race.

Afterwards, the reverse grid draw saw the top seven finishers reversed for race three, giving Plato pole position for the final race of the day.

Tom Ingram completed a strong recovery drive to eighth, having started from 21st on the grid due to his troubles in race one. The Hyundai driver strung together confident passes lap after lap, and from laps nine to 11 he made up at least one place per lap, with several impressive passes pulled off at the high-speed Goodwood and Village corners.

The top ten was completed by Lloyd, who lost out to his Excelr8 team-mate on the last lap, and Power Maxed Racing’s Ash Hand.

Like Ingram, Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden also had to put in a recovery drive after race one dramas and the Scot took the chequered flag in 11th, making up 13 places in the race.

The second PMR Vauxhall of Michael Crees was 12th, having fought close to his team-mate late in the race in a move which almost left Butcher through.

Butcher ended up in 13th, with Team HARD’s Bobby Thompson in 14th after having run as high as 11th in the early stages. Thompson was however later penalised for having gained an unfair advantage when he cut the final chicane in passing Excelr8’s Tom Chilton, with one second being added to his race time to demote him to 16th.

Troubles struck both Laser Tools Racing Infinitis – Dexter Patterson parked his Q50 by the side of the track whilst Aiden Moffat had to pit to have a flapping bonnet seen to.

Ollie Jackson took to the track late in the race after his team had missed the start to work on engine issues, whilst Excelr8’s Jack Butel didn’t take the start at all.

Race three is scheduled to get underway at 17:20 BST.
