Jonas Karklys scores pole position in Sunday qualifying at the Red Bull Ring

Jonas Karklys repeated his performance from Saturday by scoring a second consecutive pole position in qualifying for TCR Germany at the Red Bull Ring, going three tenths faster than on the previous day.

Lithuanian racer Karklys had posted the fastest time in Saturday’s qualifying session, but he wasn’t able to start from pole position after picking up a penalty for an engine change before race one, putting him to the back of the grid.

On Sunday morning, Karklys was gain the man to beat, and his lap time of 1 minute 36.676 seconds was three tenths of a second than his effort yesterday.

“I am very happy with the car,” said Karklys. “It’s going very well today after yesterday’s problems. Now all focus is on the race.”

This time, Pole Szymon Ładniak was his nearest challenger, the Liqui Moly Team Engstler driver being just under three tenths further back.

Dane Martin Andersen followed his team-mate and was third fastest, whilst race one winner Jessica Bäckman put her ROJA Motorsport Hyundai Veloster in fourth.

Max Gruhn was fifth quickest in his 2021-spec Audi RS3 LMS, being the last driver within a second of the pace in a relatively uncompetitive qualifying session by the series’ standards.

Vincent Radermecker has picked up an engine change penalty, but the Belgian would have started from last anyway as he was over 11 seconds off the pace.

The Hyundai i30 N of René Kircher has been withdrawn from race two, leaving just 11 cars to take part in the race.

Race two is scheduled to get underway at 15:35 CEST (14:35 BST).
