Ash Sutton believes 2021 title win is ‘better than the last two’

Newly crowned three time British Touring Car champion Ash Sutton admitted he “loved every second of this year” after clinching the 2021 title at Brands Hatch.

Sutton finished the season with a win in the final round of the season following two sixth place finishes in the opening two races of the day which were enough to help him claim his second successive title and his third in total in the series.

“It feels phenomenal,” Sutton told btcc.net after clinching the title.

“It feels better than the last two. To do it back to back it has proved we’re not one shot wonders. We’ve had a very good car beneath us and done it a race early.

“It’s going to be good to get my hands back on it (the trophy).

“I’ve loved every second of this year – the highs and lows of course.”

Sutton knew that he only needed to follow rival Colin Turkington around the Kent circuit to ensure he secured the championship and afterwards he went on to praise his team for their efforts during the season.

“Even if Colin won it (race two) I knew I only move one place up and I felt we were capable if I really wanted to wrap it up early,” explained Sutton.

“But it was a case of sitting pretty and acting like that shadow.

“This is such a team effort. I only do a small percentage of this and without all of the guys behind it this wouldn’t be possible.”

Sutton eventually ended the season 51 points ahead of nearest championship rival Turkington following the Team BMW’s retirement from the final race of the season coupled with his victory in the final race of the season.
