Jack Young believes he ‘definitely had the pace to take pole’ after ending Monza qualifying second fastest

Jack Young admitted he made a “small mistake” on his fastest lap that made him lose out on pole position to Franco Girolami by just hundredths of a second in the TCR Europe series at Monza.

British driver Young, who returned to fighting at the top of the timesheets following two difficult rounds aboard the Brutal Fish Racing Team Honda, had earlier set the fastest time of all in Q1 before missing out on pole in the second section of qualifying on Saturday morning.

Despite his slight disappointment, Young did say after the end of the session that the result was still something to be pleased with.

“It feels so good to get the weight out of the car after two gruesome rounds, but we qualified P10 last time and with the weight out of the car we were able to show our full potential,” explained Young.

“We were fighting for P1 but I think Franco pipped me on the line and I made a small mistake in the last corner as well so it was fair enough to him but we’ll see in the race.”

Young is one of three Brutal Fish Racing drivers competing this weekend and he went on to explain that as well as trying to get himself as high up the grid as possible, he was also trying to help both of the teams other drivers – Isidro Callejas and Martin Ryba.

“I think a lot of people were slipstreaming, but I was just trying to help out my teammates at the same time, so I wasn’t able to get the slipstream,” added Young.

“We definitely had the pace to take pole position today, but Qualifying is one thing and the race is another.”

The opening race of the weekend takes place later today at 13:05 CEST (12:05 BST).
