Franco Girolami ‘has a very good opportunity’ for strong race one result after P2 in qualifying

TCR Europe frontrunner Franco Girolami admitted his P2 in qualifying at the Nurburgring “is very important for the championship” ahead of this weekend’s two races.

Girolami finished less than a tenth of a second behind pole sitter Isidro Callejas in the second section of qualifying on Saturday morning but did out qualify championship rival Mikel Azcona ahead of race one later this afternoon.

“I know I have a very good opportunity to do well in Race 1, plus Azcona is behind me so this is very important for the Championship,” explained the PSS Racing driver.

“We need to race and we know anything can happen, so I have to do 100%.”

Girolami, who took a pair of top two results in Friday’s two practice sessions in Germany, also went on to praise pole sitter Callejas.

“Okay, I lost pole position by 0.03, but I want to send my congratulations to Callejas – he did a really, really good job,” said Girolami.

“I have to say that everyone from PSS has done a really good job all weekend; second in FP1, first in FP2 and now second in Qualifying so I’m very grateful to all of them. “

Race one of the weekend is set to take place later today at 14:55 CEST (13:55 BST).
