Determined Rory Butcher doubles up in Silverstone practice

Toyota’s Rory Butcher was again fastest in the second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Silverstone, upping his best time from the earlier first practice session.

Butcher hit the top of the times as laps continued to get quicker around ten minutes into the session and he remained at the top thereafter, initially posting a lap time of 57.441 seconds before improving it three more times and ending up with a 57.247, which was approximately two tenths of a second faster than he went in the morning session.

The Scot edged out Team BMW’s Tom Oliphant, who had only been 18^th in first practice but found six tenths of a second in between the sessions to go second.

BTC Racing’s Senna Proctor was third fastest, ahead of championship leader Ash Sutton in fourth.

Power Maxed Racing’s Daniel Lloyd broke into the top ten with the fifth-fastest lap time in his Vauxhall, ahead of the leading Excelr8 Motorsport Hyundai of Tom Ingram in sixth.

Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom was seventh, ahead of the Ciceley Motorsport BMW of Tom Chilton in eighth, the only other driver within half a second of Butcher around the short 1.6-mile circuit.

The top ten was completed by Chilton’s team-mate Adam Morgan in ninth and Excelr8 Motorsport’s Jack Butel in tenth – marking the first time the Jerseyman has broken into the top ten in a practice session, and only the second time he has even broke into the top 20, with both occasions having come at Silverstone today.

Toyota’s Sam Smely just missed out on the top ten, just over half a second off the pace, ahead of Team BMW’s Colin Turkington in 12^th.

Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 14:50 BST.
