Colin Turkington secures lights-to-flag race one win

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington secured West Surrey Racing’s 100th victory in the British Touring Car Championship by taking a lights-to-flag win in race one at Knockhill, ahead of BTC Racing’s Senna Proctor and Josh Cook.

Turkington made the most of his rear-wheel drive BMW to pull clear with ease in the opening laps, opening up an advantage of over four seconds before the safety car was required on lap four when Daniel Lloyd went off into the barriers at the chicane, after reportedly suffering from a breakage on his Vauxhall.

Racing resumed seven laps later, with Turkington again able to ease clear of Proctor’s chasing Honda, as the third-placed Hyundai of Chris Smiley came under sustained pressure from the second BTC Honda of Cook.

It took Cook until the 20th lap of the race to find a way past Smiley, with Cook making a late lunge up the inside at Clark curve which also allowed Ash Sutton to claim fourth in his Infiniti.

Despite applying heavy pressure late in the race, the fully-ballasted Sutton couldn’t find a way past Cook and had to settle for fourth.

Northern Irishman Smiley claimed fifth, ahead of the MB Motorsport Ford Focus of Jake Hill in sixth, who lost out to Sutton on lap 17 at Clark.

Aiden Moffat brought the second Laser Tools Racing Infiniti home in seventh, ahead of Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden in eighth, the Honda driver having battled past tom Ingram for the place exiting the hairpin on lap 13.

Two laps from the chequered flag Toyota’s Rory Butcher claimed ninth from Ingram, who ultimately slumped to tenth in his Hyundai, which had been the second heaviest car in the field.

Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley was 11th after fighting past PMR’s Jason Plato on lap 17 for what was then 12th, before gaining another place when team-mate Tom Oliphant was spun out at the hairpin by Butcher whilst running just outside the top ten.

Ciceley Motorsport’s Tom Chilton again finished just outside the top ten in 12th, directly ahead of team-mate Adam Morgan in 13th – only the second time this year that Chilton has beaten his team-mate.

Plato took the finish in 14th, with Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom completing the points-scoring finishers in 15th.

MB Motorsport’s Ollie Jackson had been challenging for the final point, but he ultimately retired to the pitlane having lost seven places on lap 21 when he went deep into the final hairpin.

By finishing in fifth, Sutton has now grown his championship tally to 139 points, 12 points ahead of Ingram. Rowbottom sits in third with 115 points, ahead of Hill (113), Turkington (112) and Cook (110).

Race two is scheduled to get underway at 14:40 BST.
