Mikel Azcona ‘loved the conditions’ after taking second Spa win

Mikel Azcona admitted he was ‘drifting all the time’ during the second race at Spa-Francorchamps as he went on to claim a remarkable double win.

Azcona, driving the Volcano Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición, moved quickly up through the field and completed his fourth win in the series at Spa in the last two seasons with yet another incredible performance on Saturday morning.

“From the middle of the race, the track was completely dry except the first corner. With the combination of tyres you start to slide, so you have to turn the steering wheel to the right when you turn left!” said Azcona.

“It was a very challenging race but I love these conditions because you are drifting all the time.

“The double victory here is good for the Championship but we can’t relax in case we get another zero points weekend after we missed Zandvoort.”

Azcona now has an eight point lead over Franco Girolami at the top of the Drivers Standings after his victory, but he went on to admit that he had to be at his absolute best to take the win in Belgium.

“We did again a double victory here in Spa – I love this track, the rain and the tricky conditions!” added the Spanish driver.

“It was a good decision by my engineers to put slick tyres on the front and wets on the rear; it was the best choice, but at the end we saw that Mat’o with four slicks was much faster than me, but I made a big push in the middle sector just to make a big gap.

“We did it and I’m so proud of my Volcano team and CUPRA Racing, we keep pushing for the Championship.”

The next round of the 2021 TCR Europe championship is set to take place at the Nürburgring at the beginning of September.
