Mat’o Homola admits ‘part of him is disappointed’ after not winning second TCR Europe race at Spa

Mat’o Homola revealed ‘part of him is disappointed’ after he finished second in race two of the TCR Europe series at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday morning.

Homola, driving the Janik Motorsport Hyundai i30, was the only leading driver to start the damp second race on slicks and he ended the race second after starting down in eighth on the grid.

The Slovakian driver was able to take full advantage of his different tyre strategy as the track continued to dry out over the course of the ten laps, although he couldn’t match the pace of eventual race winner Mikel Azcona.

“It’s really good, I’m super happy with second place,” said Homola.

“Still, a part of me is disappointed that I didn’t win because I had the right tyre choice, but it’s good points after our difficulties during the season.

“I made a wrong choice yesterday and we made a mistake, so today is a great result and I have to say thanks to the team and to everyone who supports me.

Homola also explained how the track conditions felt during the race and how he was able to push harder at certain parts of the circuit.

“I saw after Les Combes that it was really dry, so I thought it would be okay,” added Homola.

“The first sector was still damp, so I lost a few places there in a couple of laps, so it was very tricky to get good traction.

“But generally, it was perfect. I knew I would have a really good advantage so I tried to be clever in the overtaking and not take risks because I didn’t want to risk a penalty.”

The result at Spa is Homola’s strongest performance of the season so far, with him now sitting 14th in the Drivers Standings, 20 points behind Teddy Clairet.
