Jimmy Clairet takes maiden TCR Europe win in Paul Ricard race two

Jimmy Clairet repeated his brother’s performance from yesterday and took his first TCR Europe win in the second race at Circuit Paul Ricard in France.

Clairet, who had started race two in France from fourth on the grid, found himself taking advantage of Mikel Azcona ahead running deep into the chicane at turn one, with the French driver managing to claim the lead coming out of turn two as a result.

Azcona, who had tried a move up the inside of several cars at the first corner, did manage to move up from third on the grid into second on the opening lap, although he couldn’t match the pace of Clairet ahead.

The pair comfortably pulled away from the chasing pack throughout the 10-lap race on Sunday, with the championship leader finishing ahead of third placed Sami Taoufik in the leading Sebastien Loeb Racing Hyundai Elantra N.

Taoufik, who had started down in sixth, made an outstanding move at turn 10 on lap four that saw him overtake three cars around the outside including SLR teammates Mehdi Bennani and Felice Jemlmini as well as Franco Girolami in the PSS Racing Team Honda.

The Moroccan also claimed his first podium of the season after contact ahead between the Brutal Fish Racing Honda of Jack Young and the Hyundai of Niels Langeveld that saw both drivers being forced to retire from the race.

The two drivers had earlier got past race two pole sitter Viktor Davidovski at turn one on lap three, but the pair would collide while battling for what was third with Young suffering a left front puncture and he was forced to pull off the track.

Langeveld was seemingly able to continue despite the contact, however he dived for the pitlane at the end of lap five with damage.

This had promoted Davidovski back into third, however he lost out to Taoufik on the penultimate lap and he would end the race fourth.

Davidovksi’s teammate Franco Girolami – who had also collided with Jack Young earlier in the race – finished race two of the weekend in fifth, with reigning champion Mehdi Bennani getting the better of teammate Jelmini for sixth.

Eighth in race two was the ComToYou Racing Audi of Tom Coronel, with him and Mat’o Homola both leapfrogging Isidro Callejas on the last lap in France.

More drama took place on the last lap as three drivers – Klim Gavrilov, Dušan Borković and Evgenii Leonov – went side by side into the final corner of the race. Gavrilov was the first over the line in 11th ahead of the Serbian who was then followed by the CUPRA driver.

The top 15 were completed by Nicolas Baert and Sylvian Pussier, while Teddy Clairet – race one winner yesterday – retired on the opening lap of the race after struggling to move off the start line.
