Dániel Nagy ‘mega happy’ with podium after late TCR Europe call up

Dániel Nagy was delighted to claim a podium finish in his first TCR Europe race with Zengő Motorsport at the Slovakiaring, explaining that he only first drove the new CUPRA Leon Competición car earlier in the week.

Nagy is taking part in the season opener of the European TCR series as a one-off guest entrant, and as such the deal to race came together at short notice.

The Hungarian has competed in the series for the past three years, save for a part-season in 2019, but looks set to not contest the full season in 2021, although his full plans have yet to be revealed.

As a result, Nagy only got to drive the team’s CUPRA Leon Competición car less than a week before the event.

Having qualified in fifth, Nagy moved into fourth at start, which ultimately became third when he caught and passed Tom Coronel on lap four.

“I’m actually mega-happy,” said Nagy. “The car is completely new to me and I only drove it for the first time on Monday at the shakedown teat, so it’s been a busy week!

“I was a little bit worried about the start because I couldn’t practice so much and it’s not so easy to get it right, but it was the key to my result that I got the start right.

“The pace throughout the race was consistent; I was backing off a little at the beginning because I was not under pressure and I got quicker towards the end.

“I think I was actually quicker than the front guys over the last few laps but with not enough margin to do anything.”

Nagy’s full season plans have yet to be officially announced.
