Nicolas Baert quickest in second Jarama practice

Nicolas Baert set the fastest time in the second TCR Europe free practice session at Jarama ahead of Teddy Clairet.

Audi RS 3 LMS driver Baert, who heads into the final weekend of the season in fourth place in the championship, set a 1 minute 38.129 time that was over seven tenths of a second quicker than FP1 leader Mikel Azcona could manage this morning.

Clairet in the Peugeot 308 had gone fastest of all towards the end of the second session, but the Belgian would pip him to first on the leaderboard by just over a tenth of a second with just a few minutes remaining.

The second session saw three Peugeots in the top five, as Julien Briché took third quickest with the JSB Competition man setting a 1 minute 38.295 time ahead of Mat’o Homola and Jimmy Clairet.

Homola, who is still in mathematical contention for the title albeit 85 points behind leader Mike Halder, set a time just 0.002 seconds quicker than the second of the Clairet brothers.

Jessica Bäckman was next fastest in sixth, with John Filippi – another driver who’s in the hunt for the title – managing seventh behind his Target Competition teammate.

The Frenchman is 35 points adrift of series leader Halder going into the races in Spain and he finished the second practice session ahead of the team’s third entrant, Jose Manuel Sapag who finished eighth.

Mehdi Bennani – who was fourth quickest this morning – could only manage ninth, while Sami Taoufik in another of the ComToYou Racing Audi’s completed the top 10.

Fastest this morning Mikel Azcona was 11th fastest in the second session, while Mike Halder continued his somewhat quiet start to the weekend with a 17th fastest time as he looks to seal the championship he leads going into this weekend.

Qualifying for the final weekend of the 2020 TCR Europe season take place later today at 15:00 CEST (14:00 BST).
