Attila Tassi goes fastest again in WTCR free practice two

Attila Tassi’s lap time of 8 minutes 55.051 seconds was fast enough to keep him at the top of the WTCR time sheets at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, for the second practice session in a row.

Cyan Racing were once again hot on the heels of the Münnich Motorsport driver, but this time it was Yvan Muller leading the way for the team in second place. Thed Björk, meanwhile, will be much happier with third place in FP2 after failing to make the top ten in FP1.

Gilles Magnus was the quickest of the Comtoyou Racing Audi trio for the second time today, putting in a lap time just three tenths of a second slower than Björk to go fourth fastest.

Three seconds back, Jean-Karl Vernay would round out the top five for Team Mulsanne, around eight hundredths of a second ahead of Nathanaël Berthon in sixth.

Néstor Girolami’s time of 09:01.430 earned him seventh place, with Cyan Racing’s Yann Ehrlacher having a much quieter session in FP2 down in eighth.

Having just missed out in first practice, Tiago Monteiro managed to climb into the top ten in this session, two seconds ahead of Tom Coronel who was struggling to match the form of his team-mates, Magnus and Berthon.

Esteban Guerrieri will surely be hoping for better in qualifying too after a pair of lacklustre results in both free practice sessions, this time ending up in eleventh after his car came to halt along the Dottinger Hohe straight.

After a set of poor results at Zolder, the Argentine will need to start picking up a healthy tally of points soon if he is to challenge for title again as he did in 2019.

The trio of Zengő Motorsport CUPRAs completed the standings, with Mikel Azcona outpacing Gábor Kismarty-Lechner and Bence Boldizs in thirteenth and fourteenth place respectively.

Neither Jack Young nor Santiago Urrutia set a lap time, the latter due to crashing out on the approach to Aremberg after losing the rear of the car through the high-speed left-hander. Young had spun out into the gravel on the Grand Prix circuit on his first lap, failing to even make it onto the Nordschleife.

The field will return to the track for qualifying later today at 18:00 BST.
