Colin Turkington controls race two to take victory at Donington Park

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington took a well-managed victory in the second race of the 2020 British Touring Car Championship season at Donington Park.

The defending champion started second on the grid, but would use his rear-wheel drive traction off the line to clear race one winner Dan Cammish into turn one.

Cammish would struggle in his Team Dynamics-run Honda Civic Type R with maximum ballast, eventually dropping down to sixth position.

Race one podium finisher Rory Butcher was the second runner to benefit as Cammish struggled, getting past in his new-for-2020 Ford Focus ST and setting about challenging Turkington.

The latter’s three-second advantage was slashed when a safety car intervened in lap nine to recover Nic Hamilton’s beached Volkswagen CC from the exit of Coppice.

Tom Oliphant would come on strong throughout the race, overtaking Toyota racer Tom Ingram on the penultimate lap and challenging Butcher on the final tour to complete a 1-3 result for Team BMW.

Ingram, who appeared to struggle with tyre wear late in the race, managed to fend off a hard-charging Ash Sutton who scythed through the field following contact in race one.

The gap was just a tenth as the pair crossed the line side-by-side, with Ingram and Sutton placing fourth and fifth respectively.

Next was Cammish ahead of his team-mate Matt Neal, while Adam Morgan and Stephen Jelley enjoyed encouraging pace in eighth and ninth.

BTC Racing’s Josh Cook completed the top ten in his FK8 Honda Civic Type R, with Ollie Jackson in the second of the Motorbase Ford Focus STs in 11th position.

Behind him in 12th position was Chris Smiley, securing another points finish in a promising start to life in the brand new Hyundai i30N.

Smiley, who will start from reverse-grid pole position for race three, held off Tom Chilton’s Honda Civic with the latter’s team-mate Michael Crees a further position behind in 14th.

Rounding out the points-scoring positions was Carl Boardley in his BMW 1 Series, ahead of former stablemate Jack Goff.

The final British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Donington Park is scheduled to get underway at 17:10 BST.
