WRT confirms new line up of Fabio Scherer and Ed Jones for 2020 DTM

WRT has confirmed an all-new driver line-up for its second season in the DTM in 2020, with Swiss racer Fabio Scherer and Dubai-born Brit Ed Jones joining the Audi customer team.

WRT joined the DTM for the 2019 season as the first customer Audi team of the current era, with Pietro Fittipaldi and Jonathan Aberdein racing the team’s Audi RS5 DTM cars.

However the Belgian outfit has opted for an entirely new driver line-up for 2020, with the two former single-seater youngsters joining the team.

Scherer, 20, has competed in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for the past two seasons, claiming a podium finish at the Norisring in 2018 on his way to 14th overall in the drivers’ standings as team-mate to Aberdein, before finishing 17th overall in 2019.

Scherer previously competed in Formula 4, racing in Germany, Italy and the United Arab Emirates.

Jones, who was born in Dubai to British parents, competed in Formula Renault between 2011 and 2013, graduating to Formula 3 the same year when he took the European F3 Open title, before moving to the USA in 2015 to compete in Indy Lights.

There, Jones finished third overall in 2015, before claiming the Indy Lights title in 2016. For the past three seasons he has raced in the IndyCar Series, claiming three overall podium finishes, including the 2017 Indy 500.

Scherer and Jones will make their track débuts at the DTM tests at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain this week.

“We are delighted to welcome in the team Fabio and Ed, two young drivers that have already proven their value and see in the DTM the right series where to develop their careers,” said Team Principal Vincent Vosse.

“Once again, we are giving an opportunity to young talent, which is one of our core principles. I am convinced that Fabio and Ed will contribute a lot to the growth of WRT Team Audi Sport in our crucial second season in the DTM.”

Scherer is pleased to move into DTM, which he sees as the highest level of racing.

“It’s a real pleasure to join WRT Team Audi Sport for the 2020 DTM,” said the 20-year-old. “Moreover, it’s a dream come true as I don’t think there is anything higher than DTM!

“It’s amazing to have this possibility and I thank you everybody who made it possible. I really look forward to 2020, I am really excited, and I think we can achieve a lot.”

Jones is targeting podium finishes and victories in his maiden season in touring car competition.

“I look forward joining WRT Team Audi Sport and the DTM in 2020,” said Jones. “This is a series I have been watching closely in the past, very appealing, with high-level competition and great racing.

“I am excited to get going, with such a great team around me. Audi has won the title last year, WRT has done a great maiden season, and now the objective is to be on the podium, and if everything goes well, to go for a win.

“I know it is going to be tough, but we have everything to grow and perform well.”
