Tadasuke Makino topped the combined times from Thursday’s Super GT / DTM testing at the Fuji Speedway in Japan, with the Honda driver going two tenths faster than Lexus’ Kenta Yamashita and Audi’s Loïc Duval.
Makino put in a lap of 1 minute 30.421 seconds around the Fuji Speedway in Japan to edge out Lexus’ 2019 champion Yamashita in the closing minutes of the 45-minute session.
Duval, who has raced extensively in Japan prior to joining the DTM, was third fastest in his Team Phoenix Audi, 0.274 seconds off the pace.
Team Mugen’s Hideki Mutoh was the second-best Honda NSX driver in fourth, ahead of Keihin Real Racing’s Koudai Tsukakoshi in fifth.
The session was red-flagged near the end of the session when Audi’s Benoït Tréluyer spun his car and caused a ten-minute stoppage.
Kazuki Nakajima put his Lexus in sixth, ahead of the leading Nissan GT-R driver of Daiki Sasaki in seventh, 0.651 seconds adrift of the ultimate pace.
Ryo Hirakawa, who did not run in the second session, had earlier set the fastest lap of the day in the predominantly Super-GT only first tyre test, when he put in a lap of 1 minute 30.376 seconds in his Honda.
After Duval, the next best DTM runner was 2019 champion René Rast in 11th, seven tenths off the pace, although the Audi driver, like Mike Rockenfeller, picked up a puncture in the first session and had limited running.
Marco Wittmann in 17th was the leading BMW driver, just over a second off the pace, whilst Alessandro Zanardi propped up the timesheets in 22nd, over three seconds adrift.
Friday will see a further two free practice sessions, before a qualifying session and race takes place on both Saturday and Sunday respectively.
