Mike Rockenfeller fastest in red flag interrupted second practice

Audi Sport Team Phoenix driver Mike Rockenfeller was fastest in the second DTM practice at the Nürburgring, as Audi once again dominate the timesheets with the top six positions.

The 2013 DTM champion set a time of 1 minute 20.524 seconds to go less than four hundredths faster than Audi Sport Team WRT’s Jonathan Aberdein.

The session was red flagged only two minutes after starting following a bizarre moment where Jake Dennis’ Aston Martin Vantage shed its left side door between Turns 4 and 5.

The R-Motorsports driver was able to make it back to the pitlane and the session was resumed with 23 minutes remaining.

Audi Sport Team Phoenix’s Loïc Duval set the pace immediately after the stoppage, but was knocked from top spot by his teammate Rockenfeller.

Throughout the session drivers continued to explore the limits of the track, and their braking points. A number of drivers went straight on at the Turn 1 hairpin, however none came to any grief.

Behind Rockenfeller and Aberdein, the Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline driver Robin Frijns was third fastest, only 0.054 seconds slower than the top time, and only four thousandths faster than Abt Sportsline teammate Nico Müller.

Championship leader Audi Sport Team Rosberg’s René Rast was fifth fastest, 0.156 seconds slower than Rockenfeller.

Despite briefly topping the session, Duval ended up sixth fastest with a time of 1 minute 20.710 seconds.

Marco Wittmann was once again the fastest of the BMW cars in seventh, the Team RMG driver setting a time of 1 minute 20.711 seconds to lap within two tenths of Rockenfeller’s best.

Audi Sport Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green was eighth fastest with a time of 1 minute 20.961, nearly half a second off the pace.

The second Team WRT car of Pietro Fittipaldi was ninth fastest with a time of 1 minute 21.056 seconds, as BMW Team RMR’s Philipp Eng rounded out the top ten with a time of 1 minute 21.064 seconds.

Paul Di Rest was again the fastest of the R-Motorsports-run Aston Martins in 12th, his best time of 1 minute 21.248 seconds was 0.724 seconds slower than Rockenfeller.
