Max Hesse seizes TCR Germany series lead with victory in race two

Hyundai Team Engstler’s Max Hesse moved to the top of the ADAC TCR Germany standings with victory in race two at the Hockenheimring, winning ahead of guest driver Jessica Bäckman and reigning champion Harald Proczyk.

The race was led early on by Team Honda ADAC Sachsen’s Dominik Fugel, who passed reverse-grid pole-sitter Michelle Halder halfway around the opening lap at the entry to the Mercedes arena.

However, Fugel was unable to stay out front, as Hesse, who started sixth and was third by the end of the opening lap, reeled him in.

Hesse took the lead from Fugel at the Mercedes arena, and Jessica Bäckman followed past a couple of corners later into second as Fugel went off-line.

The leading duo were then able to hold position for the rest of the race, as Bäckman was unable to mount a serious challenge to Hesse’s lead.

Proczyk took third on lap seven when he got past Fugel exiting the hairpin, leaving the Honda driver to settle for fourth as the top three places were again locked out by Hyundais, as in Saturday’s race.

Mike Halder was fifth just behind his team-mate, with his sister Michelle following behind in sixth as the Hondas finished in order.

Racing One’s René Kircher was seventh, the young German moving up the order in the closing stages of the race, including passing erstwhile points leader Antti Buri for the place on lap 16.

Marcel Fugel, in the older-spec FK2 Honda, was eighth, having fought past the Volkswagen of Mitchell Cheah late in the race, the duo enjoying a close scrap for the position.

Cheah and Volkswagen racer Sebastian Steibel completed the top ten.

Andreas Bäckman was 11th in the second Target Competition Hyundai, the Swedish guest driver having fought back after receiving a drive-through penalty for contact with Theo Coicaud and Pascal Eberle at the hairpin on lap two.

That incident ended the races of Coicaud and Eberle, whilst Bäckman dropped to the back of the field when he served his penalty.

Antti Buri could only manage 12th after the Finn slipped back towards the end of the race, with the result meaning he loses the series lead which he had held for the past seven rounds.

After crashing out of race one on Saturday, the second HP Racing Hyundai of Lukas Niedertscheider failed to make it to the grid in race two.

Hesse now leads the drivers’ standings with 377 points, ahead of Proczyk on 363 and Buri on 356.

The season finale takes place at the Sachsenring on September 27 – 29.
