Mikel Azcona says he cannot believe the ‘amazing feeling’ after his first FIA World Touring Car Cup win, with the Spaniard taking victory in the reverse-grid race on the streets of Vila Real in Portugal.
Azcona won race two with a perfect use of the joker lap, passing early leader Ma Qing Hua by making use of the joker in a more efficient manner, emerging in the lead after the Alfa Romeo driver made a mistake in the slower kink.
Azcona had started the race from the second row of the grid and he proved he had the pace to take a deserved win, also posting the fastest lap of the race as he sought out his maiden win.
“My first win in a world championship; it’s an amazing feeling, I’ve never had this feeling,” said Azcona. “A good day for me, for the team, for CUPRA.
“I started the day very strong in qualifying, I did an amazing lap and during the race we improved the car. I was very confident with the track and with the car also.
“We did a good job through the weekend, step by step from Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was a new track for me and a difficult one, and I won with my family, my people and my sponsors [here].
“I am super-happy, I cannot believe this win.”
The victory marks Azcona’s third podium of the year and moves the consistent Spaniard up to fifth overall in the drivers’ championship standings, 62 adrift of series leader Esteban Guerrieri.
